Liberty Corner School Renovates Basketball Court Just In Time For Spring

Basking Ridge, May 13th, 2019 – Liberty Corner School officially opened the refurbished blacktop with much excitement from LCS students. The new basketball court has new asphalt pad, painted poles, and new nets. It also boasts a new court design and new backboards chosen by the LCS community.

"Over the years, I have been very impressed with how supportive the Liberty Corner School community has been towards our efforts as a school. The most recent fundraising goals were directed toward resurfacing our outside basketball court. The result of this project has provided Liberty Corner with one of the most impressive outside basketball courts I have seen. All of our students have been very excited to start using it,” said LCS principal, Dr. James Oliver.

Last spring, the LCS PTO donated $25,200 to replace older water fountains in the school, which was built in 1905 and is a nationally recognized landmark registered with the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. The installation of the new indoor fountains in November of 2018 not only provides filtered water and bottle filling stations for the children to use, but has helped eliminate waste from 23,392 plastic bottles in only six months.

To fund some of these larger capital projects, the LCS PTO decided to hold its inaugural Glow Dance-a-Thon fundraiser last year with the PE department and integrated it with the curriculum, teaching and encouraging students to eat and be healthy and to stay active. In its first year, the LCS PTO donated $20,250 to the BOE for an outdoor water fountain on behalf of the LCS community. To access the water fountains during PE class, recess or in aftercare, if on the playground, students would need to wait for supervision to cross the school’s driveway to enter the building. Now LCS students have better access to water with the fountain on the field, particularly on hot days when students need to stay hydrated.

This current year, the LCS PTO was able fundraise and donate $16,700 from the Glow Dance-a-Thon fundraiser and contribute along with LCS toward the much needed renovations of the court. Now that spring is here, students will be able to fully enjoy its brand new basketball court and water fountains during PE class, recess and aftercare thanks to the generosity of the LCS community.
