New Tenant To Replace Closing Stop & Shop Store In Basking Ridge

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — With the recent news that Stop & Shop is expected to close sometime in October, Bernards Township Mayor Ana Duarte McCarthy is shedding some light on the store's future.

"Currently, the landlord has indicated there is a new tenant preparing plans and specifications for township review," said McCarthy.

It is unclear who the new tenant is at the moment. However, McCarthy said "more details will be provided as determined."

Daniel Wolk, a spokesman with Stop & Shop, told Patch that the Stop & Shop at 553 South Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge has decided to close "after a routine evaluation of our store operations."

The store has operated in Lyons Mall since 2001, when it transitioned from Grand Union, according to McCarthy.

She said Grand Union had been the shopping center’s first tenant.

McCarthy also noted the store has been a longtime part of the community for many residents who have shopped there over the years.

Employees at Stop & Shop will be offered continued employment opportunities at nearby locations, including Berkeley Heights, Madison and Watchung.

McCarthy also said the store liquidation will include work with area food bank networks so usable products can be provided to people in need.

No specific closing date in October was announced.
