Residents Launch Nonprofit Supporting Bernards Township Police

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — In an effort to fight back against crime and support the Bernards Township Police Department, a group of residents has officially launched the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizationBernards Township Law Enforcement Fund (BTLEF).

BTLEF is dedicated solely to supporting the Bernards Township Police Department by raising private funds to enhance training, safety, community outreach, and professional development — beyond what is possible through municipal funding alone.

Residents Erin Witte, Christine Ziegler, and Mayor Jennifer Asay formed the BTLEF in March 2024 following a surge in home invasions and crime in the Township. Now the group has recently acquired its 501(c)(3) status.

Representatives from BTLEF will be at Charter Day on May 17, where the organization will have a booth near the Bernards Township Police Department. Residents can learn about the mission, meet the team, and find out how they can get involved in supporting officers.

"This fund is about giving back to the men and women who serve and protect our town every day," said Mike Fitzpatrick, President of the BTLEF. "We’re excited to work hand in hand with the community to provide additional resources that help our officers thrive, improve public safety, and deepen community relationships."

The Bernards Township Police Department has expressed strong support for the initiative.

"The creation of the BTLEF is a powerful show of support from the community we proudly serve,” said Chief Tim King. "These additional resources will allow us to expand our capabilities, strengthen community outreach, and continue raising the standards of excellence in law enforcement."

BTLEF is seeking volunteers and members, especially those with experience or interest in fundraising and communications. Involvement can help ensure the long-term success of this important organization.
