Ridge Girls LAX Holds Off Hillsborough to Win County Tournament

Senior Sam Brown is named Most Valuable Player.

Whoa, they did it again!

The Ridge High School girls lacrosse team launched this season's opening game with a win over Hillsborough, and on Tuesday night faced 'boro again in a high-energy contest for the Somerset County Tournament title, played at Bridgewater-Raritan's stadium.

This time, the buzzer ran with the Red Devils ahead by 19-14, giving the girls the county crown.

Senior Sam Brown, with four goals and four assists, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Although the Ridge girls broke past a tie of 2-2 to score goal after goal in the first half — at one point ahead by more than a half-dozen goals — Hillsborough wasn't about to hand the Red Devils the win on a silver platter.

The Raiders mounted a comeback, but not enough to turn the game around. Ridge now is 14-2 for the season.

Sam Brown _ "Playing against this team has been a big rivalry. Playing them in the finals and beating them was a great thing for our team. In practice, our coach emphasized that we needed to play smart, keeping it in our end as much as possible and eliminating the fouls."

Ridge Head Coach Laurie Anthony — "It is all the girls. They worked really hard and there is a lot of talent. It is amazing to work with them as a coach. To step in and that much talent in them and have that much talent to work with. They are definitely peaking at the right time. We had some struggles with losses that shouldn't have been losses, in my eyes. Based on talent alone, against every single team we have faced, we have been more talented. Unfortunately, the other teams have worked harder than we have. It is amazing to work with such a talented players."

The girls next head to the first round of the state playoffs later this week.
