Shinnecock and the U.S. Open

The USGA Golf Museum in Liberty Corner, NJ, currently featuring temporary exhibit about Shinnecock Hills Golf Club through the end of June.

As one of the USGA’s five founding clubs and one of the first incorporated golf clubs in America, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club has been a part of golf history in the United States since the beginning. Already underway, Shinnecock is hosting the U.S. Open Championship for the fifth time.

In 1896, five years after Willie Davis finished the original 12-hole course, Shinnecock Hills hosted both the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open Championships. In the U.S. Open, James Foulis bested the defending champion, Horace Rawlins, and just 36 other contestants to win his only major title. Although it hosted other USGA championships, Shinnecock would not host another U.S. Open until 1986 when Raymond Floyd won his fourth and final major championship. In 1995, Shinnecock helped make history when it hosted the U.S. Open during the USGA’s centennial. In a dramatic final round, Corey Pavin beat Greg Norman by two strokes. Most recently, South African Retief Goosen won his second U.S. Open at Shinnecock in 2004. Looking ahead, the USGA has already announced that Shinnecock will host the 2026 U.S. Open securing its important relationship with the USGA for years to come.

Visitors to the USGA Golf Museum will be able to view artifacts from the 1896, 1986, 1995, and 2004 U.S. Open Championships and a cleek made by James Beveridge, a Scottish-born clubmaker who became the professional at Shinnecock in 1894.
