Shoes make the workout

Most of us choose our shoes based on looks or the brand but have you ever stopped to figure out which shoe is right for you?  In this blog I will give a few helpful tips on how to choose the right shoes to wear to the gym, for running and for everyday living.  If you need advise or tips on different sneakers please leave a comment and I will respond.
Lets start in the gym:
If you are lifting heavy weights get a pair of lifting shoes.  Even the old school flat bottom Converse All Stars will do.  Did you know that most shoes are designed to support a 185 pound man?  While a few extra pounds over may not be the worst thing ever, imagine yourself doing squats or leg press with 100+ pounds.  The shoes simply cannot withstand the weight and our body is getting hurt in the process.  A flat pair of shoes will eliminate the collapse seen by other shoes and protect your body.
Running shoes:
This Category drives me nuts because for runners, you spend hours on the road or treadmill every week, constantly pounding your feet on the ground.  Running shoes will last for 300-500 miles on average or 6 months which ever comes first.  So if you run an average of 3-5 miles per day, shoes should be changed in about 3-5 Months.
Finally Cross Training:
Cross training in my mind includes everything from running to light weights to walking to taking a spin class (assuming you don't own a pair of spin shoes)  In this Category comfort is everything because chances are you wear them all day so they should be perfect for your foot.  Make sure you have the right arch support and the shoe is the right size.  If you don't know how to determine this I highly recommend going to a running specialty shop as asking for assistance.  (sneaker factory in basking ridge or the Morristown Running Company in Morristown are my favorites)
