Snakes, Insects and Canoe Trips: Environmental Education Center Programs July 5-11

The center at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge offers a number of kid and family programs throughout the summer.

The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge has scheduled the following Naturalist-led programs to help children and adults enjoy the wonder and the beauty of nature as spring takes hold in Somerset County. The Environmental Education Center provides many entertaining and educational programs for children and adults year around.

Pre-registration is required for programs and may be done by calling 908-766-2489 or NJ Relay at 711 for individuals with a hearing or speech impairment. Registration is available online at www.somersetcountyparks.org.

CHILDREN PROGRAMS

Down Under
Tuesday, July 6 from 10:30 A.M. to 12:00 Noon
Children ages 4 to 6 will learn what is happening right under their feet on
a hike to explore the forest floor.
Fee is $9 per person.

Serpentine of Mine
Thursday, July 8 from 10:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M.
Children ages 3 to 5 with a parent will enjoy a walk through the Great Swamp to seek out snakes and learn the role that they play in the ecology of the area.
Fee is $10 per pair and $5 per additional child.

Sweeping the Fields
Saturday, July 10 from 2:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.
Children ages 3 to 5 with a parent will head out to the fields to learn about insect
habitats and discover the other animals that visit the tall grasses.
Fee is $10 per pair & $5 per additional child

ADULT & FAMILY PROGRAMS

Hands on Nature – NEW
Saturday, July 10 from 10:30 A.M. to 12:00 Noon
Family and friends will explore the natural world on an adventure to feel
animal fur and snake skin, touch bones and shells, and use the
sense of touch to discover other natural objects.
Fee is $9 per person

HELP! – New
Sunday, July 11 from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.
Environmental Education Center Naturalists need help with a variety of
endeavors including gardening, assistance with preparation for
programs and special events, sign making and more.
The program is free.
Registration is not required.

Kids on the Water
Sunday, July 11 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.
Children ages 7 to 15 with a parent will explore the Passaic River by
canoe.
Fee is $10 person.

CAN-U-CANNU
Sunday, July 11 from 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
Prepare for EEC river trips with an introductory class on basic paddling techniques, safety, and handling a canoe in and out of the water.
Fee is $10 per adult and $8 per youth or senior.
