Somerset Co. Nursing Home Death Toll Rising In Coronavirus Crisis

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — The latest update from state officials breaking down the impact of the new coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic in nursing home and long-term care facilities has shown an increase in infections and a rising death toll in Somerset County.

The state has a dashboard set up that tracks the number of cases statewide, including how many cases and fatalities involve long-term care facilities. The 1,046 cases in Somerset County are spread among the 30 impacted facilities. Last week, only 26 long-term care facilities had reported infections. There have been 170 deaths at these facilities as reported by the New Jersey Department of Health on Wednesday. Last week the report had 83.

The largest outbreak in Somerset County is now at Green Brook Regional. The report shows 100 cases, up from 83 were logged there last week. Out of those there were 5 deaths, up from 3. However, the largest death rate in Somerset County is now Foothill Acres Rehabilitation and Nursing Center with 16 deaths, up from 5 last week and 53 cases, up from 27.

Statewide, 18,533 cases of the coronavirus have been identified at 497 long-term care facilities. There have been 3,376 deaths at these facilities, with the most egregious case documented at the Andover Subacute & Rehab Center Two, where police removed 17 bodies from the facility last week.
