Somerset County Food Banks Seek Donations

SOMERVILLE – Recently, Somerset County food banks have reported that the number of families who are food-unstable has doubled since the onset of the healthcare crisis. This sudden need is causing a rapid depletion of resources, and food bank managers are concerned that the food supply will not be sustainable without continuous and substantial donations.

“Many New Jersey residents are suffering,” said Somerset County Freeholder Director Robinson. “For those who are fortunate enough to have the resources, donating just one item or one dollar to a food bank of your choice can make a difference.”

According to food bank managers, shelf-stable items such as tuna fish, canned meat, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, milk and other essential items such as diapers, and paper goods are in high demand.

“The number of residents seeking assistance has increased by almost 200%,” said Somerset County Community Development Director and committee member of Community Organizations Active in Disaster Kimberly Cowart. “Some fear that food banks will not be able to keep up with the demand over time. I hope residents, who are able, will donate to help their neighbors.”

The Somerset County Community Organizations Active in Disaster (SCOAD) is a county-run taskforce that is activated during a public emergency. SCOAD is comprised of local non-profits, municipal and county leaders who collaborate and strategize about how to help keep residents safe and informed during a state or federal catastrophe.
