Volunteers Needed to Give Free Tax Return Preparations
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides free tax return preparation for seniors and others with low to moderate income.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Tax season is beginning to get underway and volunteers are needed to help give seniors and others with low to moderate income a free tax return preparation.
The Bernards Township Library is a long time sponsor of the local chapter of VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. This IRS endorsed effort provides free tax return preparation for seniors and others with low to moderate income (up to about $60,000).
The current team consists of six people to each give four to six hours per week to assisting taxpayers from mid-February through mid-April. Last year they prepared about 130 returns.

Anyone who has done their own taxes and who would like to learn more while giving back to the community is welcome. The program uses very good tax preparation software and provides training in both tax law and tax preparation.
There is also the possibility of earning continuing education credits for this volunteer work for commercial tax preparers, CPAs, or enrolled agents.
