A Georgia resident has been accused of cheating a Nutley man out of $30,000 after he got word that he won a "Clearing House Sweepstakes."

NUTLEY, NJ — A Georgia resident has been accused of defrauding a Nutley resident of $30,000 after he got word that he was the “lucky winner” of a sweepstakes, police said Monday.

According to the Nutley Police Department:

“In April, an 84-year-old Nutley man received a call advising him that he was the lucky winner of a $1,273,250 Publisher Clearing House Christmas Sweepstakes. All he needed to do was pay the withholding tax of $30,000. The victim sent the money to a woman in Georgia. After his son discovered the fraud, police were notified and investigated.”

Last week, detectives charged Gloria J. Dean of Georgia with theft by deception.
