Abandoned Essex County Pit Bulls Recovering After ‘Cruel’ Ordeal: Shelter

Pit bulls Eddy and Edith, discovered chained to a N.J. fence in the summer heat, will soon be available for adoption, shelter staff say.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — If you’re one of the social media users who have taken up the cause of Eddy and Edith, two abandoned pit bulls recently discovered in Newark, then you can take a breath of relief for now.

The canines are OK, say their caretakers.

On Wednesday, the Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter provided an update about the pair of lovable dogs, stating that the two appear to be in good health despite the ordeal they both suffered.

“Apparently the pair were abandoned by a heartless owner, who chained them to a fence in the sweltering summer-like weather. Thankfully, a good Samaritan happened upon the pair and did not rest until someone stepped in to help them. The city of Newark Animal Control was called and advised that they would be there in three days. The AHS facility in Newark took the call. ACO Tom went out to retrieve the panting but grateful pair and brought them to the cool safety of the van, then transported them to AHS Newark… You have to wonder, what goes through someone's mind that commits such a cruel act? Thank goodness there are still good people in the world, like the person that didn't rest until the dogs were brought to safety.”

AHS staff wrote that the pair appear to be about 18-months-old, and that Edith may have recently had puppies.
