NUTLEY, NJ — A retired U.S. Army major and "Hometown Hero" from Nutley recently spoke about her distinguished military career on a local podcast series.
Adrienne M. Smith – Nutley's first "Hometown Heroes Banner" honoree – was the latest guest on the Inside Nutley Podcast.
Hosted by lifelong resident Thomas Greco, the monthly podcast provides a look at current town issues, explores how the town is moving forward, spotlights residents and businesses, and answers questions from Nutley residents.
Here's what to know about Smith's military background, according to the township:
"During more than 20 years of military service, Major Smith served in a variety of commands and deployments, including assignments in Korea, Germany, and Iraq. She retired following a distinguished career decorated with four Meritorious Service Medals, eight Army Commendation Medals, seven Army Achievement Medals, three Army Good Conduct Medals, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. Nutley's Hometown Heroes Banner Program recognizes local veterans and active-duty service members for their dedication and sacrifice."
Smith reflected on her military journey—from enlisting at age 17 to her specialized roles in nursing and satellite operations with Space Command. She also shared insights into her family's military legacy, her transition to civilian life, and what led her to choose Nutley as the community to call home and raise her daughter.
