BELLEVILLE, NJ — Belleville's 2026 municipal budget still hasn't crossed the finish line, which recently caused a delay in the mailing of property tax bills.
Township administrators issued the following update on Wednesday:
"Due to the delay with the 2026 budget adoption, property tax bills were unable to be mailed on a timely basis. The grace period for the 4th quarter taxes will be extended to allow sufficient time to remit payment. Grace period date will be posted on our website once the tax bills are generated and mailed."
Although the town's budget still awaits a final thumbs-up, local homeowners will likely see a tax hike under the proposed version.
Chief financial officer Frank DiMaria recently confirmed the budget includes a $175 municipal tax increase for a homeowner with a property assessed at roughly $300,000 – a figure that was also cited earlier this year.
After the state finishes its review of the budget, the township council will have to hold a public hearing and final vote before it is finalized.
PROPERTY TAXES IN BELLEVILLE
Property taxes in New Jersey are mainly made up of three parts: school, municipal and county.
The Belleville Board of Education gave a green light to the district's latest school budget in April. A homeowner with a property assessed at $280,565 will see an increase of $268 to the school portion of their taxes.
Belleville isn't the only Essex County municipality that is still awaiting approval of its 2026 budget. Other towns and cities with still-unresolved municipal budgets include Newark and West Orange.
