NUTLEY, NJ — An "underground food club" cooked up by a North Jersey chef finally has a brick-and-mortar home in Nutley.
The new restaurant – Soj – is the brainchild of Taryn Clayton, who concocted it as a venue to host her Underground Supper Club: a 16-seat communal dining experience with a seasonal theme and a six-course tasting menu.
Located at 11 High Street in Nutley, the vegetable-forward eatery is open and serving on limited dates (see the list of upcoming events here). Spirits are BYO, and the all-female kitchen staff can accommodate a wide range of dietary restrictions, gluten intolerances and allergies.
What will diners find on the menu at Soj? That depends on Clayton – and where her inner muse has recently taken her.
There is only one sure thing: no two meals will be alike.
Guests arriving for a Gothic Garden dinner on Oct. 30 will sample foods inspired by the "darker side of the harvest." In November, the menu will shift to "There And Back" – a reminiscence of Spain featuring six courses of tapas. Previous offerings have included dishes influenced by Clayton's travels in Morocco and Thailand.
"The vibe? Imagine a dinner party in the home of me and my people," the chef invites guests to ponder.
"Supper Club is my version of farmers market fine dining – inspired by the season, soul and the story we're telling that night," Clayton says.
Looking to order something specific for takeout or delivery? Soj is also accepting new clients for local pickup and a one-hour delivery radius of Nutley.
