
At last night’s meeting of the Belleville Board of Education, board members held a bittersweet vote to accept the resignation of Michael Meyers, the district’s head of curriculum and instruction. Several board members thanked Meyers for his service, which ends with his retirement on Jan. 1, 2012.
In other news:
- Four Belleville school officials are to be honored by Aspira, a Hispanic-American organization, at a ceremony later this month (the date had not yet been determined as of press time). Among the honorees is board member John Rivera, the first Hispanic-American elected to public office in Belleville.
- Meyers announced that the results of the NJASK tests will be discussed at the next meeting of the board. The tests gauge whether individual schools have met “adequate yearly progress” under federal No Child Left Behind laws.
- Board president Peter Zangari announced that all of the parent-teacher organizations in the district are now in compliance with a number of new requirements imposed by the district over the summer. Those requirements concern certification of non-profit status, maintaining up-to-date financial records and acquiring insurance.
- Staff members were appointed to a number of coaching and club advisor positions for the 2011-12 school year, including advisors for the senior class and yearbook, as well as coaches for winter basketball and bowling.
The next meeting of the Belleville Board of Education will be held Nov. 14 at 8 pm at the library of Belleville High School, 100 Passaic Ave.
