Belleville Businesses Get Stuck With Counterfeit Bills: Police
A pair of Belleville businesses got stuck with several hundred dollars of counterfeit bills after visits from alleged fraudsters, police say
BELLEVILLE, NJ — A pair of Belleville businesses on Washington Avenue got stuck with several hundred dollars of counterfeit bills after visits from alleged fraudsters earlier this month, authorities say.
According to the Belleville Police Department, the following alleged instances of fraud took place this month:
- Washington Avenue (April 9, 7:46 p.m.) – A Walgreens manager reported to police that three suspects entered store and purchased numerous gift cards valued at $840 with cash. It was later discovered the cash was counterfeit bills, including seven 100 dollar bills, two 50 dollar bills and two 20 dollar bills. The bills were taken and placed into evidence; an investigation is ongoing.
- Washington Avenue (April 10, 1:45 p.m.) - Officers responded to Quick Check on a report of counterfeit bills. On arrival, officers spoke to store manager who stated a store employee had received two 100 dollar counterfeit bills. The suspects were described as a Hispanic male in his 20’s and a black female between 20 and 30-years-old. The bills were taken and placed into evidence; an investigation is ongoing.
