Belleville Cops Hand Out Free Light Bulbs In Attempt To Reduce Crime
It was a real bright idea, Belleville officials say.
BELLEVILLE, NJ — It was a real bright idea, Belleville officials say.
Officers with the Belleville Police Department recently took a trip around town to hand out free energy efficient LED light bulbs in recognition of National Change-A-Light Day.
According to the BPD, the light bulbs they distributed have integrated dusk to dawn sensors, allowing them to turn on automatically when they sense darkness – and potentially helping to reduce crime.

The effort was well-received, a Belleville resident reported on social media:
“I was watching TV and heard a knock at my door. Sgt. Abate and Officer Danise from the Belleville PD were on a detail tonight brightening up Belleville one light bulb at a time. They stopped by because one of my porch lights was out and the porch was dark. They gave me a box of light bulbs. These things are very bright and have automatic on and off sensors. Thanks to the Belleville Police. Great job and another reason I don’t mind paying taxes for programs like this.”
