Belleville Cops Arrest Fedora-Wearing Burglary Suspect

Belleville police say a fedora-wearing burglary suspect tried to rob a home while a woman and her children slept inside.

BELLEVILLE, NJ — Belleville police allege that a home burglary suspect may have been wearing a fedora at the time of the crime, authorities say.

The Belleville Police Department issued the following advisory about the incident:

“Belleville police need your help identifying the person depicted in this sketch. The suspect is wanted for a residential burglary that occurred around 3:45 a.m. on May 19. The incident occurred on Eugene Place in Belleville. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his early 20's, about 5 feet 9 inches and 160 pounds, wearing a fedora-style hat and a thin mask over his eyes, a black and neon green shirt, and black basketball style shorts.”

A woman and her two children, ages 3 and 6, were in the home at the time of the incident; the suspect reportedly covered the victim's mouth and tried to drag her into another room when she woke up and saw him in the home, ABC7 New York stated.

On Tuesday, the Belleville Police Department announced that detectives arrested Jermaine Ramirez, 25, of Newark, in connection with the burglary and theft.

"The BPD would like to thank the community for allowing the police to access their private residential security systems which aided in the arrest," authorities stated. "The BPD also thanks the NJ State Police for providing a sketch artist in this case."
