Belleville Dumps Garbage Contractor After ‘Inadequate Service’

Belleville official: "The level of service provided to our community was inadequate and failed to meet our expectations."

BELLEVILLE, NJ — For the first time in a decade, Belleville will be using a new garbage contractor, officials announced earlier this week.

The Belleville Town Council passed a resolution authorizing the award of a temporary emergency service contract for solid waste and recycling collection service during their Feb. 28 meeting.

Town Manager Anthony Iacono offered more details about the switch in a message to the community on Tuesday:

“I would like to bring to your attention that after a decade of service, the Belleville Town Council has decided to hire a new solid waste (garbage) contractor. There were several reasons why we have chosen to go with a new company, but most importantly the level of service provided to our community was inadequate and failed to meet our expectations.”

Iacono continued:

“The new contract begins on March 1, and we are hopeful for a smooth transition. We ask for your patience during the first few weeks as the new contractor becomes familiar with our garbage/recycling routes.”

To ensure that household garbage is collected properly, Iacono suggested that residents follow these rules:

  • When discarding bulk (furniture), do not put out more than three pieces at any given time
  • When discarding mattresses, they must be enclosed in a plastic covering (Lowe's and Home Depot provide such coverings)
  • Recycling cannot be placed out in plastic bags

“With your cooperation, we are confident that we will be providing a much needed, improved service to our community,” Iacono concluded.
