Belleville Man Arrested For Jewelry Thefts At Stores In Nutley, Bloomfield

Police: The man asked to see expensive jewelry then ran out of the store.

A trio of Essex County police agencies apprehended a Belleville man after he reportedly pulled off a series of jewelry thefts in Nutley and Bloomfield.

According to the Nutley Police Department, Michael Williams admitted to stealing a $1,570, 14-karat gold bracelet from a Franklin Avenue jewelry store on July 9, running out of the shop with the goods when an employee turned their back on him to answer a ringing phone.

The next day on July 10, Bloomfield police reported that a similar incident took place at store in their jurisdiction, this time involving $2,500 worth of jewelry.

According to a release from the NPD, police caught a break when the Bloomfield Police Department released surveillance photos of the July 10 theft and a Nutley officer was able to identify Williams.

Bloomfield and Nutley police arrested Williams on July 15 and charged him with theft by deception. His Nutley bail was set at $5,000, in addition to Bloomfield’s $20,000.

He was transported to Essex County Jail.
