Belleville Man Charged With DWI, Assault After Joralemon Street Crash

Belleville police arriving on the scene found two cars with "heavy damage," authorities say.

BELLEVILLE, NJ — Belleville police charged a local man with DWI and aggravated assault by auto after allegedly finding an empty beer bottle and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath following a two-car crash earlier this month.

According to the Belleville Police Department, officers responded to a report of a car accident on Joralemon Street around 10:12 a.m. on Oct. 2 to find two vehicles with heavy damage, one of which had damage “consistent with a roll over.”

The responding officers allegedly noticed the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from one driver’s breath and also found an empty beer bottle near his vehicle, police stated.

According to police, emergency responders checked the driver - Glenn Retuerto, 28, of Belleville - for injuries but he refused further treatment. Police then charged Retuerto with DWI and took him into custody.

Emergency responders transported the driver of the second vehicle to an area hospital for unknown injuries, police said.

In addition to DWI, police charged Retuerto with aggravated assault by auto and issued him summonses including careless driving, reckless driving, driving while suspended, failure to exhibit documents and having an open container in a motor vehicle.
