Belleville Man Fatally Shot In Newark; No Arrests Made: Prosecutors

A 38-year-old Belleville man died after a shooting in Newark. A police investigation continues, authorities said.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A 38-year-old Belleville man died after a shooting in Newark early Monday morning, authorities said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the fatal shooting of Omar Rivera, 38, of Belleville. Prosecutors released the following statement about Rivera’s death:

“On Jan. 16 at 12:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a potential homicide on the 300-block of North 7th Street in Newark. The victim was transported to University Hospital in Newark, apparently suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at 4 a.m.”

No arrests have been made, prosecutors said Sunday.
