A witness found a 57-year-old man's body beneath a waterfall. The cause of death remains undetermined, police said.
BELLEVILLE-NUTLEY, NJ — A Belleville man’s body was recovered from the Third River in Nutley last week, authorities announced Monday.
According to the Nutley Police Department, a witness called police to report that a dead body was beneath the waterfall along Kingsland Street late on Friday morning. When officers arrived, they found a deceased, 57-year-old man, who was later identified as a Belleville resident.
Police and fire crews worked together to remove the man’s body. He was taken to the county medical examiner’s office.

Nutley Police Director Alphonse Petracco said the area of the park where the man’s body was found is a “popular attraction,” and the water is relatively shallow at that part of the river.
Police Chief Thomas Strumolo said it’s too early to "speculate" on the cause of death. Heavy rains a few days prior could have carried the body downstream, however – until the medical examiner and detectives complete their investigation – the cause of death remains undetermined, he said.
