Belleville Schools Will Close For 3rd Day Due To Warehouse Fires

BELLEVILLE, NJ — Belleville schools will be closed for a third straight day due to last weekend’s devastating warehouse fires.

Public schools in Belleville will remain closed on Wednesday, May 6, according to a social media message from Superintendent Erick Alfonso.

The decision was made after discussions with Belleville OEM and emergency service officials regarding ongoing conditions and updated recommendations, Alfonso said.

“Our team has been working continuously to evaluate every possible pathway to safely reopen schools,” the superintendent said. “We are doing everything possible to get our students and staff back into our buildings without compromising anyone’s safety.”

“We recognize the disruption this has caused for our families and appreciate the continued patience, flexibility, and support from our community as we navigate this evolving situation together,” Alfonso said.

Additional updates will be shared as soon as they become available, the superintendent said.

Schools were also closed on Monday and Tuesday in the wake of Sunday’s fire, which sparked a state of emergency in the township. Several fundraisers have been launched to benefit the victims.
