BELLEVILLE, NJ — The Belleville Board of Education held a public meeting on Monday, which included a special recognition for a teacher who saved a choking student.

Erin McGarry, a teacher at School #9, was recognized by the board for going above and beyond to aid one of her students.

“As a school principal, there are countless moments in which I have been filled with pride,” Joseph Rotonda said. “One of those moments was earlier this month.”

According to Rotonda, a student began to choke during an otherwise “typical” lunch period. When McGarry noticed them in distress, she acted quickly – rushing to their aid. The student has since made a full recovery.

“On behalf of the students and staff of School #9, I would like to thank you for assisting a child during a very dangerous situation,” he said. “You have made the entire school district proud.”
