Belleville Woman, 25, Fatally Shot In Newark: Cops

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A Belleville woman died after being shot in Newark shortly after midnight on Tuesday. No arrests have been made, authorities said.

The fatal shooting took place on the 900-block of Franklin Avenue in the Stephen Crane Village Housing Complex in Newark, according to a joint statement from Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose.

Emergency responders transported the victim, Janell Johnson, 25, of Belleville, to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 12:54 a.m., prosecutors said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating the fatal shooting.
