2 Belleville Schools Placed On Lockdown, Cleared

Belleville authorities placed a pair of schools on lockdown due to a carjacking, police say.

BELLEVILLE, NJ — The Belleville Public School District placed a pair of schools on lockdown Thursday morning due to police activity, administrators say.

According to a Thursday morning statement on the Belleville Public School District website, School #7 and the High School were placed into active lockdowns as a precaution due to “outside police activity in the area.”

No people were permitted in or out of the buildings during the lockdown, school administrators said.

Belleville school administrators posted the following update on the district website later Thursday morning:

“The lockouts have been lifted and all schools have returned to a regular program. Everyone is safe... Great job students, faculty and Belleville Police Department.”

The Belleville Police Department posted a statement about the lockdown on its Facebook page.

“Belleville police responded to a carjacking in the area of Garden Avenue. As a precaution, School 7 and BHS were placed in a lockout status. The lockout has been lifted. Both suspects are in custody. The lockout is a precautionary measure to prevent any unauthorized persons from entering our schools. Uniformed officers were immediately dispatched to both schools as a precaution only.”
