Cosmetics Bag Caused Belleville School Evacuation: Police
Belleville High School was temporarily shut down "in an abundance of caution" when someone found an unattended bag, police said.

BELLEVILLE, NJ — An unattended cosmetics bag caused an evacuation at Belleville High School on Wednesday morning. Police eventually deemed the bag “safe” and students returned to class, authorities said.
School officials posted the following message to the district website on Wednesday morning:
“Belleville High School is in an active evacuation event due to a perceived threat. All students are safe. More information will be forthcoming.”
The Belleville Police Department said that officers were called to the scene after an “unattended package” was discovered on school property. Police conducted an investigation “in an abundance of caution” and secured the area. There was no immediate threat to students, authorities said.

The item – which turned out to be a cosmetics bag – was declared safe, police said. The incident caused a temporary closure of Passaic Avenue near the school.
