Taking in too many calories and burning too few—the culprit behind the obesity epidemic in 12.5 million U.S. children ages 2 to 19. On Sunday, September 25, 2011, at 8:30 a.m., Clara Maass Medical Center (CMMC) Foundation will host its annual LIFELINE CHALLENGE TO HEALTHY LIVING, a Walk & Ride to help eliminate and prevent childhood obesity. Participants will form teams or register as individuals to walk or ride at Essex County Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ, to raise awareness and money to fund elementary school programs conducted by local ambassadors of health—Clara Maass Medical Center registered dietitians, physical fitness professionals and local firefighters. These ambassadors educate and encourage children and families to practice active, healthy lifestyles.
To register or to become a corporate sponsor, visit www.claramaassfoundation.org. Individual registration costs $25; registration for a family costs $50. Prizes will be awarded to individuals who raise the most money through donations. Prizes include iPod Shuffles, Olympus Digital Cameras, and iPads. The event will also include a DJ, celebrity appearances, warm up exercises and demonstrations, raffles, massages, food vendors and a LIFELINE CHALLENGE poster contest.
