Rush Holt Lecture

US Representative Rush Holt will speak on “The Politics of Science and the Science of Politics” on March 22, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. in University Hall Room 1070.

Holt, who has represented central New Jersey in Congress since 1999, serves on the Committee on Education and the Workforce, and the Committee on Natural Resources. He has served on the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century and was instrumental in helping to secure more than $700 million in new federal funding for science and technology research.

Prior to becoming a Congressman, Holt held a number of academic and consulting positions, and was assistant director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory at Princeton University, the largest center for research in alternative energy in New Jersey. He has conducted extensive research on alternative energy and received a patent for a solar energy device. Holt earned a BA in physics from Carleton College in Minnesota and a master’s and PhD from NYU.

A five-time winner of the game show Jeopardy, Holt beat Watson, IBM's computer system in a simulated round of Jeopardy at a 2011 event to promote innovation.
