Ex-Nutley Police Officer Passes Away

Raymond Hackett – the "Nutley Motorcycle Cop" – will be missed.

Retired Nutley police officer and longtime township resident Raymond Hackett recently passed away in his Russell Avenue home, police reported.

According to the Nutley Police Department, Hackett – whom many residents may remember as the “Nutley Motorcycle Cop” – was on the force for 26 years before retiring in 1999.

In addition to earning the rank of lieutenant, Hackett “amassed numerous awards, commendations and letters from the public praising his actions” during his service, the NPD stated.

“I’m always sad to hear of the passing of a fellow officer, especially one that I had known for so many years,” Nutley Police Chief Thomas Strumolo stated. “He will be missed.”

Nutley Mayor and Police Director Alphonse Petracco said that although Hackett retired before his commission, he remembered him – and his red mustache.

“Certain police officers… make an impression on you,” Petracco said. “Lt. Hackett was one of them. He would often come into my deli just to grab lunch or say hi. Ray will always be remembered and greatly missed.”
