Flames Surge From Downed Wire In Belleville; 'Extremely Dangerous,' Official Says

BELLEVILLE, NJ — A downed power line is creating an “extremely dangerous situation” in Belleville, the town’s mayor reported Tuesday.

Frank Vélez shared video footage of an arcing wire at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Franklin Avenue.

According to the mayor, Belleville police and fire crews are onsite, and PSE&G is working to safely de-energize the power line.

“Do not approach the area or attempt to drive or walk through it,” Vélez said. “Please use alternate routes and avoid the intersection until further notice.”

Earlier in the day, Vélez reported that the Belleville Office of Emergency Management met to review preparations for the storms expected to arrive on Tuesday and Tuesday night.

“Our Office of Emergency Management, police, fire, DPW, EMS and all township departments are closely monitoring conditions and stand ready to respond if needed,” Vélez said. “We encourage residents to stay weather-aware, avoid driving through flooded roadways, and limit unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.”
