Fraud Reported In Nutley: ‘Altered’ Check, Unauthorized Bank Charges
A check was "altered" with a different amount, Nutley police said. Other recent instances of fraud have also been reported.
NUTLEY, NJ — More cases of fraud have been reported in Nutley, with recent incidents including unauthorized bank charges and a check that had been “altered” with a different amount, police announced Monday.
The Nutley Police Department released the following details about multiple cases of fraud that were recently reported in the township:
Sept. 8 (Chestnut Street) – “A victim of fraud informed officers of unauthorized charges they observed on their bank account. They stated they advised their bank of the transactions and their account was frozen. They were offered the opportunity to be entered as an Identity Theft Victim, but declined at the time.”

Sept. 11 (Carrie Court) – “A victim of fraud responded to headquarters to document the incident. They stated they had mailed a check and on a later date they were notified by their bank that someone had altered the check with a different amount. The victim stated their bank had closed the account and will reimburse the money. The Detective Bureau was advised.”
Sept. 12 (White Terrace) – “A victim of fraud responded to headquarters stating they observed unauthorized charges on their bank account. They stated they informed their bank of the charges and closed the account. They were advised to monitor their financial accounts and offered the opportunity to be entered as an Identity Theft Victim but declined at the time. The Detective Bureau was notified.”

Other recent scams that have been reported in Nutley include incidents involving “spyware,” a fake link from an Amazon impostor, a scammer who requested a driver's license photo and a fake $50 bill, police previously said.
