“Ethan Varona exemplifies courage through his leadership, perseverance, and ability to bring people together. As a sophomore starting quarterback, Ethan keeps his teammates motivated in difficult moments and leads by example on and off the field. Ethan also gives back to his community by volunteering with a local recreation football program, where he helps coach younger players and teaches teamwork, discipline, confidence, and respect. In the classroom, he is an honor roll student who supports classmates and leads by stepping up when others hesitate. Born extremely premature at 24 weeks and losing his twin, Ethan found a sense of brotherhood through football and his teammates. After starting the sport in fifth grade and playing multiple positions, he worked his way to quarterback. His selflessness, resilience, and commitment to others make Ethan a true Heart of a Giant.”
"I volunteer with my local recreation football program and help coach younger players," Varona wrote as part of his submission to the contest.
"I enjoy helping them become better football players, but I also try to teach them about teamwork, discipline, confidence, and respect," Varona said. "I want the younger players to understand that becoming a good athlete is also about becoming a good person."
