Local Unemployment Remains Stubbornly HIgh

Township Rate Still Above 10 Percent

The township’s local unemployment rate in April dipped slightly from the month before but still remains in double-digits, well above state and national rates for the same month.

According to the US Department of Labor, there were a total of 18,029 township residents either employed or looking for work in April, the most recent month for which figures are available. Of those, 16,068 were working and 1,961 were seeking work, for an unemployment rate of 10.9 percent.

In the month prior, the rate was 11.3 percent. In April 2010, the local unemployment rate was about the same, 11.6 percent.

For Essex County as a whole, the unemployment rate was 10.7 percent, unchanged from a year earlier.
