BELLEVILLE, NJ — A New York resident has been arrested and accused of killing his girlfriend in Belleville last month, authorities announced Friday.

Johnny Rivera, 52, of New York City, was charged with murder in connection with the death of Candy Torres, 50, of Belleville, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors released the following statement about Torres’ death:

“On March 12, family and friends were unable to reach the victim by phone. A family member went to the Belleville home on Hero Way and discovered Torres unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:16 p.m. An autopsy later determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma.”
