Massive Fire Closes Roads In Belleville

"This is an active emergency, residents and pedestrians need to stay clear," the mayor posted on social media.

BELLEVILLE, NJ — Firefighters were battling a massive blaze Sunday afternoon in Belleville, according to the mayor.

The fire was happening on Cortlandt Street, Mayor Michael Melham posted on social media around 3 p.m., adding multiple agencies were responding.

"This is an active emergency, residents and pedestrians need to stay clear," Melham wrote.

Videos posted by Melham of the scene show a massive plume of smoke filling the sky as first responders spray the structure with water.

The Lyndhurst Police Department described the blaze as a commercial structure fire in a social media post warning residents about the smoke. The North Arlington Police Department urged residents to close their doors and windows.

Roads were closed due to the fire, according to Melham.
