Military Monuments In Essex County Restored On Memorial Day

The Belleville Historical Society is currently working on restoration projects in Belleville and six neighboring towns.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — The following news release comes courtesy of the Belleville Historical Society. Find out how to post announcements or events to your local Patch site.

The Belleville Historical Society was recently commended for their work restoring military monuments on Memorial Day by the town councils of Newark and Montclair.

Over the past five years, the society has restored and cleaned many military and veteran monuments throughout northern New Jersey.

At their Memorial Day ceremony at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Newark, the society was presented with a Newark City Council proclamation. The commendation was sponsored by Councilman Louis Quintana for the society's work restoring monuments in the historic cemetery, including the monuments of four Civil War generals, two Civil War officers killed in battle and Civil War veteran and New Jersey's 31st governor, Franklin Murphy.

At Montclair's morning ceremony, Councilman Robert Russo presented the society with a Montclair commemorative memento for the society's restoration work at the town's Edgemont Park and Watchung Plaza military monuments.

At both events, the commendations were accepted by Belleville Historical Society president Michael Perrone and trustee Val Hadshinow. Hadshinow is best known for his work engraving the 3,000 names on the Essex County 9/11 Monument at Eagle Rock.
