NUTLEY, NJ — Children with special needs are finding a place to foster friendships and develop social skills through a popular basketball program in Nutley.

The township’s “Bounce Out the Stigma Basketball Program” is designed for children with autism, ADHD, epilepsy and mental/emotional challenges. It gives them an inclusive, supportive and engaging environment where children can develop their physical, social and emotional skills – through the fun and teamwork of basketball.

The program was founded in 2005 by former professional basketball player Mike Simmel, according to a news release from the township:

“Simmel, who was diagnosed with epilepsy at age two, found basketball to be his passion and outlet. The program was directly inspired by an experience at age 16 when he was removed from a basketball camp after having a seizure. Despite facing challenges, including special education gym class, Mike excelled in high school and college basketball. However, even with his achievements, he continued to feel the stigma associated with epilepsy.”

After a 13-year career playing with the Harlem Wizards, Simmel was inspired to dedicate his time to working with special needs youth. He has returned to Nutley this year to continue pursuing his mission of helping children through the program.

Nutley Commissioner Mauro Tucci said that seeing the smiles on the faces of the kids in the program is “incredible.”

“Our goal is to make sure our special needs community has access to the same types of programs and opportunities as their peers, and we’re committed to doing that in every way we can,” Tucci said.

The Bounce Out the Stigma Basketball Program is open to players ages 7 to 21. This year’s program began on March 23 and runs through May 4. Learn more here.
