Editor’s Note: The following incidents are reprinted directly from the Nutley police blotter, a listing of selected incidents that may not include the full scope of activity in the area. All of the following incidents are accusations, and all suspects should be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
8/15/2015
Theft from vehicle – Coeyman Avenue – A resident reported a past occurred theft from their vehicle that was parked on their property in the driveway. The victim states that a few items were missing from inside their car when they got in it today. There was no sign of forced entry and the owner of the vehicle could not be certain if it was locked or not when parked. The victim was advised that they would be contacted if any new information regarding the whereabouts of their property is discovered.

Theft – Adams Court – Officers responded in regards to a report of theft of laundry. Upon arrival, the victim stated that on about 4 different occasions, they have discovered miscellaneous articles of clothing to include brassieres, gym pants, socks, and other undergarments missing from their laundry. It is believed that an unknown party is taking the clothing out of the laundry room. The estimated value of the clothing is approximately $400. The property management company will be advised of the incidents.

Criminal mischief – Ridge Road – The caller stated that while traveling on Ridge Road their vehicle was struck by eggs on the windshield from the driver’s side. The victim did not see any individual and could not give a description. There was no visible damage to the vehicle and the area was checked with negative results.

Fraud – Headquarters received a report of fraud. The victim stated that they were contacted by their bank regarding credit checks made against their accounts. Additionally, a Discover credit card was found opened in the victim’s name with their old address. Discover was contacted and the account has been canceled. No other suspicious activity was detected and the credit card companies will be monitoring the victim’s accounts.
General Information – Headquarters received a walk in report regarding a suspicious incident. The victim inquired about a summer rental through Craigslist, and right before they sent the money wire they contacted the management company of the complex they were interested in. They confirmed the property exists, but the person advertising the property is not the proper owner. The victim cancelled their rental agreement and then contacted Wildwood Police to document the incident. Wildwood Police does have an active investigation pending.

Criminal Mischief – Church Street – The caretaker of the Nutley Museum contacted police regarding criminal mischief. Officers arrived on scene and observed damage to the two air conditioning units on the west side of the building. Both units had the tops smashed in and it appeared that the damage was caused by someone jumping on it. The total cost to fix both units is estimated at over $4,400. There are no suspects at this time.

Arrest on Warrant – Pake Street – A call regarding an occupied suspicious vehicle was received by Headquarters. Officers responded to the area and found that the driver had a suspended license and two active warrants out of Union City and Harrison. Rafael Sanders, age 40, from Montclair, was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters without incident. Union City Headquarters was contacted and asked for Sanders to be transported to their jurisdiction. Before leaving, Sanders complained of illness and was taken to Clara Maas Hospital for care. Upon release he was taken to Union City Police Headquarters where he was left with officers.
