Nutley Cops Chase Wheelie-Popping Bike Rider

Officers tried to stop the 19-year-old, but he made several attempts to elude them before they were able to catch up, Nutley police say.

Nutley, NJ – Nutley police arrested a bike-riding, wheelie-popping man earlier this month after he allegedly refused to obey officers’ orders to ride safely, authorities said.

According to the Nutley Police Department, on May 2, officers on assignment near Centre Street saw a man – later identified as a 19-year-old Nutley resident – riding his bike on only one wheel.

While popping a wheelie, the man swerved to avoid striking a parked car, then lost control of the bike and entered into street traffic, forcing an oncoming car to swerve to avoid hitting him, police said.

The bike rider then went back to the side of the road and continued to ride in “wheelie-style,” coming close to traffic several times, police stated.

Officers reportedly advised the man to ride in a safe manner – with both wheels on the ground – but he allegedly ignored their commands, police said.

The officers then tried to pull the rider over, but he allegedly made several attempts to elude them before they were able to catch him and place him under arrest, police said.

When arrested, the bicyclist produced two forms of identification that did not belong to him, which he told officers that he found at a party, police stated.

Police charged him with disorderly conduct, obstructing administration of law and multiple motor vehicle-related violations.
