Editor’s Note: The following incidents are reprinted directly from the Nutley police blotter, a listing of selected incidents which may not include the full scope of activity in the area. All of the following incidents are accusations, and all suspects should be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

911 Call – Franklin Avenue – A resident of Pinnellas Florida expressed concern for a Nutley resident who expressed wanting to harm themself over a Facebook post. Police were able to locate the party in question who explained to police that they were just concerned about an upcoming surgical procedure and that the statement was taken out of text.
Theft – A resident reported that the electrical ground cable had been cut from their meter. The resident showed officers a freshly cut wire that fell short of the grounding clamp. Verizon was notified.

Dog Bite – Spurr Place – A delivery person delivering Chinese food was bitten by the customer’s dog while making a delivery. According to report when the customer opened the door the dog bit the man’s upper right arm, tearing his sleeve and causing a minor injury. A check found the dog to be properly vaccinated.

General investigation – Franklin Avenue – Police were called to a Franklin Avenue location when a caller reported a child left in a vehicle. When police arrived they discovered there was a 17 y/o sibling in the running vehicle with the child.
Fraud – The victim of fraud responded to headquarters to report that they received a call from their bank reporting that there was a purchase from Apple Pay. The victim’s social security number was attached to the charge causing the victim to be concerned and was entered into a FBI theft file.

Suspicious Incident – Glendale Avenue – Police responded to a home that initially believed to be vacant. When police arrived they found a woman residing within the house claiming the home had been previously damaged. The information was transferred to code enforcement for occupancy verification.
8/3/2015
Vehicle Damage – Police took a report from a woman who reported that her vehicle was damaged after going through a township car wash. There was a debate as to whether the car was previously damaged.
Motor Vehicle Damage – Wilmington Drive – A Nutley resident who was on vacation returned to find their 2013 BMW tampered with. It appears an actor accessed the fuel tank in an effort to siphon fuel.
Recovered Stolen Vehicle - Police recovered a stolen 2009 Nissan Murano, on Hancox Avenue near Washington Avenue. The vehicle was reportedly stolen out of Passaic on 7/30/2015. Police are investigating.

Damage to car windshield – A Stanley Avenue resident reported to police that he received an overnight parking summons on his windshield and noticed a crack in the glass. He alleges that the officer may have inadvertently let the wiper down too hard causing it to crack the glass.
Burglary- Police responded to Romano Street in response to a burglary. The home owner reported to police that several items were stolen from his home, and pointed out an unlocked kitchen window to police. Detectives responded to process the scene and are investigating the incident.
Suspicious Incident - A resident on Terrace Avenue reported that she observed a man standing between her home and her neighbors. She immediately closed her shade. She described him as bald male in his forties. Police were unable to locate any suspicious parties.

Suspicious Incident - 1:00 a.m. - Police responded to Big Tree Garage on Washington Ave in response to an intoxicated party lying on the ground. When police arrived they determined the man to be intoxicated and transported him to hospital for evaluation.
Suspicious Incident - 3:11 a.m. - A Lafayette Place resident reported seeing a suspicious vehicle parked in front of his home for an extended period of time. When he confronted the driver, the resident stated he fled the area, resident attempted to follow him through two towns terminating in Newark. Police advised the resident not to follow suspicious persons and to notify police of any suspicious activity.
Damage to Storm Door – A Hartford Drive resident reported to police that when he received a yellow directory book on his front door step, he noticed his storm door glass had shattered. It is believed that the delivery of this book may be responsible.
Fraud- A Stanley Avenue resident reported that she received a call from what she believed was an IRS agent advising that she was about to be sued for past due money owed. The panicked resident was about to provide the caller financial information to restore the $3,000 debt when she realized this may be fraudulent. She refrained from sending money and notified police. This is a common scam, and residents are reminded the IRS does not make telephonic notification for past due taxes.
Stolen Motor Vehicle - A Wilson Avenue resident reported that their 2014 BMW SUV Model X5 was stolen from in front of their residence between 10:30 and 11 p.m. on this date. Victim reported to having $4,000 worth of golf clubs inside the vehicle at the time. The vehicle was entered stolen into the police database.
Assault - Police took a report of an assault that took place at a Church on Highfield Lane. The victim reported that an ex-friend of his poked him in the eye during a dispute. He was treated by Nutley Rescue and released on scene.
DWI Arrest - Police responded to Walnut and Nutley Avenue on a report of an ill driver in a car. When police arrived, they discovered 36 y/o Rochelle Haynes, of Allentown, Pennsylvania - who was staying at 7th St. in Newark - under the influence and arrested her. Police discovered her passenger, Jacquelin Serrano, of Newark, was also under the influence, and that Serrano’s five-year-old daughter was in the back seat of the vehicle at the time. Haynes refused to provide police with a breath sample and was subsequently charged with refusal, DWI, driving with an open container within the vehicle and child endangerment. Serrano was charged with having an open container in a vehicle and child endangerment.
Shoplifting Arrest - Police responded to a report of a shoplifting at a Harrison Street establishment. The employee followed the man onto Harrison Street, where police apprehended the suspect in possession of several items. The man - later identified as Yamil Lopez of Newark – first provided a false name to police. He was checked on fingerprint machine which revealed his real identity. Lopez had close to $9,000 in warrants for his arrest out of West Orange, East Orange, Bloomfield, Maplewood and Hudson County.

Misunderstanding- Police responded to an Edison Ave home when the caller reported that someone approached her vehicle and was yelling loudly. When police arrived they found a local man talking loudly on his cell phone and had nothing to do with the woman in the driveway.
Fraud Attempt- A Williams Street resident reported that they received a call from a foreign speaking female advising that she had five criminal warrants for her arrest. Police called to the scene checked the resident and proved that she was not wanted and that it may have been an attempted fraud.

Medic Alert – Police responded to 7 William St in response to a medic alert signal they received. When Officers arrived they were unable to gain entry into the assigned apartment. Police were unable to locate building managers and needed to force entry into unit under emergent circumstances only to discover apartment unoccupied. Management and tenant were later notified of entry and door damage.
Suspicious Person - Police responded to a suspicious persons call alongside Nutley High School. When they arrived they found a 35 y/o homeless man sleeping in the shaded area. He advised police he was waiting for a bus and allowed to leave without incident.
Traffic- A 2005 Ford was stopped on Rt. 21 when police were alerted the registered owner was wanted. They learned the driver who was not the wanted party was driving the vehicle with a suspended driver’s license. He was issued a summons and vehicle was impounded. Registered owner unable to be located at time of incident.
