Nutley Girl Scouts Give Police Heartwarming Message, Goodie Bags

"Police sacrifice their lives every day," Nutley's PBA president said. "Often a simple thank you is all we need to keep our spirits high."

NUTLEY, NJ — Nutley police got a pleasant surprise from a local Girl Scout troop during a recent visit to their headquarters: homemade “goodie bags” with messages in support of local law officers' daily struggles and successes.

According to the Nutley Police Department, Girl Scout Troop #20054 recently paid their police headquarters a visit during which they got to see how their local law enforcement works. The girls got to see how officers take fingerprints – done using lasers, not ink these days – as well as the prisoner holding cage and the inside of a police cruiser.

In return, the girls had a surprise gift for police officers… homemade goodie bags stuffed with candy and a message about why each piece was chosen.

Here's the thought process behind each candy, according to the scout’s message:

  • Life Saver—To remind you of the many times you’ve been
  • Starburst—For the Burst of Energy you will need.
  • Payday—Because you’re not doing it for the money
  • Paperclip—To hold it all together
  • Hershey Kisses—Because you deserve them
  • Gum—To help your unit stick together
  • Tootsie Roll—To help roll with the punches
  • Peppermint Patty—To help you keep your cool
  • Snickers—To remind you to keep your sense of humor
  • Mounds—For the mounds of courage you need.

“Police sacrifice their lives every day,” Nutley PBA President Gerard Tusa said, praising the heartwarming effort. “Often a simple thank you is all we need to keep our spirits high.”
