NUTLEY, NJ — The Nutley Public Library is now requiring face masks for all patrons aged 2 and up as coronavirus cases rise throughout the county.

The library made the announcement via social media on Wednesday.

Essex County is one of several New Jersey regions that's been thrust into the spotlight as COVID-19 cases rise across the nation.

Some health officials and experts have blamed the more contagious delta variant, which accounted for 53.2 percent of coronavirus cases in New Jersey over a four-week period ending on July 3, federal data shows.

Earlier this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released an online map of counties with "substantial" and "high" rates of COVID-19 transmission. According to the CDC, Essex County had a substantial level of community transmission of the virus from July 21 to July 27.

According to statistics from the county, here are some recent cumulative COVID-19 case totals in Nutley:

  • Aug. 5 – 3,103 cases
  • July 29 – 3,087 cases
  • July 22 – 3,059 cases
  • July 15 – 3,049 cases
