Nutley Mayor Gives 'State Of Township' Speech: Development Updates, Town Milestones

Mayor John Kelly gave updates about several important real estate projects. He also recapped some recent milestones for Nutley.

NUTLEY, NJ — Mayor John Kelly III presented his 2025 state of the township address last week, providing updates on several important real estate projects and recapping some recent milestones for Nutley.

Kelly presented his speech on behalf of the Nutley Board of Commissioners (BOC).

“As the [board] started our terms last year, I said that Nutley is a destination in life, and it continues to be a destination in all facets of life,” Kelly said.

“Significant progress has been made on the township's redevelopment projects, our residents continue to raise the bar, business is booming, home values are at record numbers and smart changes are enhancing our everyday lives,” he continued.

Kelly offered updates on some high-profile development projects in the township:

CICCOLINI PROPERTY – “The BOC has entered into a contract with a redeveloper to purchase the site, pending due diligence by the redeveloper. As it stands, the deal promises significant benefits to the town. For instance, public parking will increase from about 75 spaces to approximately 125 spaces on the property, the town will gain a minimum 5,000 square feet of parkland and will be paid $4.5 million dollars for the property. HOFFMAN LA-ROCHE/ON3 – “The BOC has made significant progress negotiating with the redeveloper at the ON3 site. DIAMOND SPRINGS – “After multiple planning board meetings and reviews, the Nutley Planning Board granted preliminary and final site plan approval for the project at the old Diamond Springs Pool Club. This project will revitalize the area, provide 82 age-restricted (55 and older) luxury apartments and provide increased tax revenue for the township. 777 BLOOMFIELD AVENUE – “The Board of Commissioners is actively working with and supporting the Board of Education’s efforts to improve its financial stability. Renovation of the building at 777 Bloomfield Avenue is on schedule, allowing for the Board of Education office relocation and providing space for 150 pre-K students is progressing rapidly, on target for a September opening.” Read More: Nutley Buys Building For School District, No Tax Increase, Officials Say

Kelly said that Nutley’s housing market continues to grow stronger, pointing to Realtor.com’s recent ranking of the township – which placed it 34th in the “top 100 hottest real estate markets in the nation.”

“The BOC has been working tirelessly to promote our local businesses and to create opportunities for the creation of new businesses,” Kelly added.

Another major milestone? The rollout of a new garbage collection system, the mayor said.

“This change not only is more aesthetically pleasing but also helps us avoid a potential cost increase for residential garbage services,” Kelly said. “Additionally, we've seen a reduction in usage costs when comparing monthly figures to those of last year. For example, in January 2025, we hauled away 70 fewer tons of waste compared to January 2024. Furthermore, rodent complaints across the township have decreased by an impressive 75 percent.”
