NUTLEY, NJ — Nutley’s mayor is being deployed overseas for military service, township officials reported Friday.

John Kelly III will be deployed to Iraq in August, according to a statement from the township.

“We are so very proud of our mayor, U.S. Army Maj. John Kelly, as he deploys with the New Jersey Army National Guard in support of Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve,” Nutley Commissioner Alphonse Petracco said.

Kelly will be deployed for approximately six months. He serves as the unit commander’s legal advisor.

Kelly said that Deputy Mayor Thomas Evans – the town’s revenue and finance commissioner – is ready to preside over commissioner board meetings in his absence.

“I am honored to be able to serve my country, and I am grateful that with the support of my fellow board of commissioners, our township government and I will continue to function as we always have,” Kelly added.
