NUTLEY, NJ — Nutley municipal officials have announced the plans for the town’s 2017 Memorial Day Weekend events and annual Memorial Day Parade.

The Nutley Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 29. According to a township news release:

“Weather permitting, opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. at our World War II monument located on Vincent Place between the Nutley Public Library and Town Hall. Following the ceremony, the welcome of the parade participants will take place at the Park Oval and step off at 11 a.m. The parade route being the same as previous years: Chestnut Street to Passaic Avenue to Centre Street to Franklin Avenue, with the reviewing stage in front of JHW Middle School. Father Tom Nicastro will offer the prayers at the opening ceremonies and Audrey Hasselbrook will offer closing prayers at the Oval, and this year’s Grand Marshal is Steven D. Crowley.”

In addition, Nutley Mayor Joseph Scarpelli and the Board of Commissioners will be inviting family members of soldiers, both past and present, to march in the parade, and are collecting names of current military veterans in the township. These names will be added to an already existing banner which will be carried throughout the parade and displayed on the Nutley Park Oval fence outside of the Town Hall.

MEMORIAL WEEKEND WALK IN THE PARK

As part of Nutley’s Memorial Day weekend events, a tour titled “A Walk in the Park” will be held on Sunday, May 28.

According to a town news release, the tour, hosted by Nutley Museum director John Simko, begins at 10 a.m. at the Mud Hole (near the intersection of Passaic and Vreeland avenues) and travels along the Third River.

“Simko will talk about the river’s role in Nutley history as a source for early industry, as inspiration for world-class artists, as a symbol of civic pride, as an important boundary marker, and as a fitting memorial to our war veterans,” the release stated.

The tour ends at noon inside an 1875 brick schoolhouse (now the Nutley Historical Society and Museum) where refreshments will be served.

“A Walk in the Park” is free, but is limited to 30 people and requires registration. Participants can register for the tour by emailing johnsimko1014@gmail.com or by calling 973-752-8984 and leaving a message, phone number and e-mail address.
