Nutley Police Blotter: Sept. 26 to Oct. 1

Editor’s Note: The following incidents are reprinted directly from the Nutley police blotter, a listing of selected incidents that may not include the full scope of activity in the area. All of the following incidents are accusations, and all suspects should be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

9/26/15

Theft – Brookline Avenue – The company providing the ride service for a local festival reported a theft of five, 100-foot copper electric leader lines that provide power for the carnival rides. Estimated value of the lines is approximately $5,000. The victim is not sure of anyone who would do this to the company, but wished to report the incident for insurance purposes.

9/27/15

Theft of Services – Hancox Avenue – Officers responded to Flora Louden Park on a report of theft of services. Upon arrival, the victim, a taxi driver, stated they drove an actor from NYC to Flora Louden Park and the actor ran off without paying the $100 that was owed for the ride. The actor is described as a white male, early forties, 5’10” in height, medium build, blonde hair and beard, wearing a gray button down shirt and blue jeans. The actor was last seen running southbound on Passaic Avenue near Harrison Street. Belleville PD was notified of the incident. Units checked the area, but were unable to locate the actor. No further action taken.

Criminal Mischief – River Road –The Management Company of a Condo complex located in the area reported acts of criminal mischief near the pool area. Observed were two males walking around the pool area throwing garbage cans, personal flotation devices, and black backs of broken concrete into the in-ground pool. The manager was advised of their right to sign complaints through the Municipal Court and to contact police should any further incidents take place.

Burglary to Auto – Whitford Avenue – The victim spoke with officers and reported that when they went to their vehicle, they observed brake lights illuminated on the vehicle. As they got closer to the vehicle, they pressed the unlock button on their key ring which turned on the interior lights of the vehicle. It was then that the victim realized an unknown male was inside the vehicle. The actor was described as a black male with dreadlocks, (hair tied back behind his head), wearing a blue track sweater, jeans or possibly sweatpants, and white shoes. When the interior lights went on the unknown male exited the vehicle and came within 10-15 feet of the victim. The actor yelled, “put your hands up, Put your hands up!,” while placing his hand on his hip, implying that he had a weapon. The victim complied with the request of the actor and the actor then ran from the area. Officers shared the description and information regarding the burglary with the surrounding towns. The Detective Bureau was called in to take over the investigation.

Fraud – Headquarters received a walk in report regarding fraudulent charges on a credit card. The financial institution contacted the victim regarding a charge from Home Depot on their card. The victim did not authorize that charge and several others that appeared on the card. The bank canceled the account and notified the credit bureau on behalf of their customer.

Fraud – The victim arrived at Headquarters to report their bank card was used at a pizzeria in Pennsylvania without their authorization. The financial institution has already cancelled the account and issued a new account number and card to the victim. The bank required a police report for their records regarding the incident.

Criminal Mischief – Bloomfield Avenue – A bus located in the parking lot of Rheinheimer Park was found to have 4 windows broken on the driver’s side of the vehicle. It appears rocks were thrown at the windows to break them. The bus is self-insured.

Theft – Franklin Avenue – The owner of a local business reported two incidents of theft from their store. The actor is a known customer to the establishment along with an unfamiliar party. The items removed without paying were described as 3 complete skateboards at a value of $140 each, a sweatshirt hoodie at $60, a pair of skate pants at $65, 3 hats at $30 each, and 3 pairs of socks at $12 each. An estimated total of approximately $671. The shop owner was advised of their right to sign complaints through the Municipal Court should the party be positively identified.

9/29/15

Criminal Mischief – Ravine/Harrison - Parks Department personnel reported criminal mischief to the bathrooms in the park. Actor/s defecated in the sink and broke the water fountain and light in both bathrooms. Estimated amount of damage is approximately $630. There are no suspects at this time.

Fraud - The victim of fraud responded to Headquarters to report the incidents. It appears the victim’s email has been used on several bills including Sprint, and PSE&G. The social security number or date of birth have not been used in any of the instances, just the email. The victim was advised to monitor their credit and report any suspicious activity to Police. They declined entrance into the Identity Theft Victim database.

Fraud – Officers responded to Headquarters to take a report of fraud. The victim stated they had several charges on their bank card from three different stores, totaling $1,190, they did not authorize. Officers advised the victim to contact their credit card company to shut down their account, which was already done. The victim declined being entered into the identity theft victim data base at this time.

Fraud – Another report of fraud was received at Headquarters. The victim received a bill for a TJ Max credit card that they did not open. The bill had a balance of $934. Customer service was contacted and a fraud case was opened and a freeze was placed on the card immediately. There was no other fraudulent activity on the victim’s credit report. Officers advised the victim to continue monitoring their accounts and to contact them in the event something is reported.

10/1/15

Attempted Burglary – Valley Road – Police responded to the area regarding a female party seen entering a parked vehicle and then attempting to climb into a window of a home. Mallory Kainey, 30, of Nutley, was placed under arrest and transported to Headquarters without incident. She was charged with criminal attempted burglary, (3rd degree), burglary to auto (3rd degree) and theft (DP). Kainey was processed and advised of her mandatory Court date upon her release.
