NUTLEY, NJ — New Year’s Eve has come and gone in Nutley. But that doesn’t mean the fireworks have stopped, local authorities say.

On Monday, the Nutley Police Department released a reminder that the possession and use of illegal fireworks is still a criminal violation in the Garden State.

According to Police Chief Thomas Strumolo, the state’s current law permits some types of fireworks. However – with the exception of sparklers, party poppers and novelty devices that remain on the ground – most fireworks are illegal in New Jersey.

Anyone that possesses illegal fireworks can be charged with a petty disorderly person offense up to fourth degree crime, which could result in 18 months imprisonment and a $10,000 fine, Strumolo said.

That’s not to mention that they’re annoying for your neighbors, authorities added.

Police Director Alphonse Petracco said Nutley police have recently received “numerous” complaints from local residents about fireworks being set off during evening hours.

“Safety remains our number one concern, second to the disruption and property damage they are causing our residents,” Petracco said.
